First openly gay State Senator in Illinois
First Ethiopian-American Senator
First Black Senator for the 7th District
Mike Simmons is an advocate, small business owner, policy-maker, activist, and state Senator for the 7th Senate District of Illinois, which covers the North Side of Chicago where he was born and raised. On February 6, 2021, Mike was sworn in to represent the 7th District marking a series of trailblazing firsts: he became the first openly gay State Senator in Illinois history, the first ever Black State Senator to represent the north lakefront, and the first Ethiopian-American to serve in either chamber of the Illinois General Assembly. Mike believes fervently in being a courageous voice for people who have been silenced in government, giving those affected by policy decisions a direct voice in shaping the legislative agenda, and fighting boldly for the communities he now represents.
